Tweetum... Tweetum is a small sparrow who fell out of a nest through the interior of a wall in May, 1999. We heard Tweetum inside a wall back on May of 1999 and expected to have a badly injured hatchling which would die and decompose inside the wall. Upon ripping out the wall to retrieve the hatchling we instead found a uninjured and healthy baby bird who for reasons unknown liked to walk backwards. The bird fell some ten feet and apparently bounced and tumbled through the wall, the spinning probably saving him from any injurious impact. We were unable to reunite Tweetum with his mother and nest and discerned that either abandonment or release would probably mean a certain death for the little bird. So with an eye dropper and several types of food we spent many late nights nursing the bird into a generally people-friendly little sparrow. In 2006, Tweetum is still alive, tweeting, enjoying grapes, seeds, and bread, flying around me and cheerfully pooping in my hair. I caught this shot of Tweetum in Memphis. The bird's sitting with us on the floor and was studying the TV long enough for me to catch this close-in shot with a floor-set Sony FD75. Black Background version of this page. Main Page |
